How Much Water Does Artificial Turf Save? An Oregon Homeowner's Breakdown

The GI Landscape Team · April 15, 2026

Water-bill comparison graphic showing turf savings vs traditional lawn watering

A real lawn in Oregon drinks about 30,000 gallons of water a year. That's not a typo.

The average American lawn uses around 0.5 gallons per square foot per week during the growing season. For a 1,200-square-foot yard — average for a Portland metro residential lot — that's roughly 600 gallons every week, or 15,000 gallons over the May-to-October growing season. Add winter watering during dry spells and the overwatering most homeowners do without realizing it, and you're easily at 25,000-30,000 gallons a year.

Artificial turf needs zero of that water to stay green.

What that means for your water bill

Portland metro residential water rates in 2026 run about $4.10 per 1,000 gallons (Tier 1) climbing to $9.40 per 1,000 (Tier 3, where most lawn-watering households end up in summer).

For a 1,200 sqft lawn switched to turf:

  • Annual water savings: ~28,000 gallons
  • Annual bill savings: $180–$280 depending on your tier
  • 10-year savings: $1,800–$2,800

That's before you factor in mowing, fertilizer, weed killer, aeration, reseeding, and the gas for the mower.

The drought math

Oregon hit a Level 2 drought across most of the Willamette Valley in 2022 and again in 2024. Watering restrictions kicked in. Brown lawns became the norm. A turf lawn doesn't care — it looks the same in a drought year as in a wet one.

We installed a turf lawn for a family in Tigard in 2018. Their summer water bill went from $340 to under $190. Six years later, they've saved roughly $4,400 on water alone — and their grass still looks the way it did the week we finished.

It's not just about money

Oregon's been having harder summers. Water districts have been raising rates and tightening restrictions. The math on lawn watering only gets worse from here.

Turf isn't a luxury. It's the rational answer.
